Day 1: Northern Coast (Kirkjufell and West)
Depart Reykjavik early (7am) via Route 1 and Route 54. Stykkisholmur (2 hours): the most characterful town on the peninsula, with coloured houses on a headland overlooking Breiðarfjörður bay. The view from the lighthouse hill over hundreds of small islands and skerries in the bay is extraordinary. Continue to Grundarfjörður for Kirkjufell mountain and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall — the Snaefellsnes landmark and Iceland's most photographed mountain. Evening at Grundarfjörður or Ólafsvík accommodation.
Day 2: Western Tip and Southern Coast
Snaefellsjökull National Park: Djúpalónssandur black pebble beach (lava rock lifting stones), Dritvík historic fishing station ruins, the Arnarstapi sea arch and basalt column coastline. Snorkelling or glacier tours on Snaefellsjökull if booked. Southern coast back to Reykjavik via Búðir black church (one of Iceland's most photographed small churches, on the southern shore of the peninsula), Ytri Tunga beach (grey seals on the rocks in summer), and Borgarnes (Settlement Centre museum worth 90 minutes). Return to Reykjavik by evening.

Accommodation on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula ranges from the functional to the exceptional. Grundarfjörður has several guesthouses with mountain and fjord views — the position below Kirkjufell on the north coast is ideal for aurora and midnight sun photography. Stykkishólmur has the most varied accommodation including Hotel Stykkishólmur (converted warehouse on the harbour, sea views). For the most atmospheric option, farmstays on the southern coast (Búðir area, Arnarstapi) provide immediate access to the sea cliff and lava landscapes. Book ahead for July and August — Snaefellsnes accommodation is limited relative to visitor demand.
Practical Information
The complete Snaefellsnes circuit is approximately 200km from Borgarnes (the junction town on Route 1). Driving time without stops is around 3.5 to 4 hours — with stops, allow 8 to 10 hours for a full circuit. Petrol stations are available in Stykkishólmur, Grundarfjörður, Ólafsvík, and Snæfellsbær (Hellissandur). The Brjánslækur ferry from Stykkishólmur crosses to the Westfjords — if combining Snaefellsnes and Westfjords, this removes the need to drive back to Reykjavik and north to the Westfjords junction.

Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss is the primary photography subject on the peninsula. The classic composition from the roadside puts the two falls in the foreground with Kirkjufell behind — the falls provide foreground interest and the mountain provides the vertical anchor. This composition works best in the 2 hours after sunrise and the 2 hours before sunset when the light is directional. In summer, the midnight sun provides extraordinary light on Kirkjufell from the northwest from approximately 10pm to 2am. The aurora above Kirkjufell (October to March, KP 3+) is one of Iceland's definitive photographs — from the south side of the mountain, looking north, with the mountain lit by the aurora above.
