Understanding Iceland's Volcanic Activity

Iceland sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where two tectonic plates pull apart at around 2.5cm per year. This makes it one of the most volcanically active places on earth — with an eruption somewhere on the island roughly every four to five years on average.

Aviation colour codes explained

• Green: Volcano is in its normal non-eruptive state.
• Yellow: Elevated unrest. Increased seismic activity or ground deformation.
• Orange: Eruption imminent or minor eruption underway with limited ash.
• Red: Major eruption in progress. Significant ash cloud affecting aviation.

For travellers, Green or Yellow means normal activity. Orange and Red affect aviation and may close roads in the affected area. Always check all conditions before travel.
