Day 1: Reykjavik to Vik (180km)
Depart Reykjavik on Route 1 east. Seljalandsfoss (90 min) — walk behind the falls. Skogafoss (20 min east) — base view and staircase climb. Reynisfjara black sand beach. Overnight in Vik. Driving time: approximately 3 hours. Add 3 to 4 hours for stops.
Day 2: Vik to Hofn (320km)
The longest driving day but with the most extraordinary landscapes. Skaftafell glacier hike (2 to 3 hours). Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach. Overnight in Hofn. Driving time: approximately 4 hours plus stops. This is the day to start earliest — being at Jokulsarlon by late afternoon gives the best light for the lagoon and beach.
Day 3: Hofn to Egilsstadir (260km)
East Fjords. The Ring Road winds through a series of fjords — Djupivogur, the mountain pass to Berunes, Breiðdalsvík, the pass to Fáskrúðsfjörður. Seydisfjordur detour (30km return from Route 1) is strongly recommended — mountain pass, rainbow street, blue church. Overnight in Egilsstadir.
Day 4: Egilsstadir to Myvatn (170km)
North via Route 1 and the Modrudalsfjallgardar highland road (optional scenic detour). Dettifoss waterfall (30km off Route 1 via 862 or 864 — take both for different viewpoints if time allows). Myvatn afternoon — Hverfjall crater walk, Dimmuborgir lava formations. Myvatn Nature Baths evening. Overnight at Myvatn.
Day 5: Myvatn to Akureyri (100km) — Rest and Culture Day
Myvatn morning — Hverir geothermal field, Krafla volcano and Viti crater. Godafoss waterfall (on Route 1 between Myvatn and Akureyri). Akureyri afternoon and evening — botanical garden, restaurant dinner. The shortest driving day provides recovery time for the second half of the circuit.
Day 6: Akureyri to Borgarnes (240km)
West via Route 1 then south on Route 60 or the Snaefellsnes peninsula detour. Husavik whale watching (90km north of Akureyri, 3 to 4 hours) is an excellent optional addition if departing early. Borgarnes overnight — the Settlement Centre museum provides excellent context on Iceland's founding period.
Day 7: Borgarnes to Reykjavik via Golden Circle (300km)
Morning drive south on Route 1 with optional Snaefellsnes Peninsula stop (Kirkjufell mountain is 2 hours from Borgarnes). Golden Circle afternoon — Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss. Return to Reykjavik. Blue Lagoon stop if departure allows (requires advance booking).
