Understanding Iceland Weather
Iceland weather changes fast. The Icelandic saying goes: if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes. The same day can bring sun, rain, snow and wind in rapid succession, particularly in winter and spring.
Wind is the real threat
Temperatures are rarely extreme — Reykjavik averages -1C in January and 12C in July. But wind above 20 m/s makes outdoor activity dangerous and driving difficult. Check the IMO wind map before driving remote roads.
Road closures follow weather
Highland roads close on wind and snow warnings. Always check road conditions alongside the weather forecast. The two are inseparable for trip planning.
