Five days in Iceland is enough to experience the country's defining landscapes without the rushed feeling of a shorter trip. This itinerary covers Reykjavik, the Golden Circle, the full South Coast, and Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon — the four elements that form the core of any Iceland experience. It is based on arriving and departing via Keflavik Airport and assumes a rental car for full flexibility.
Day 1: Arrival and Reykjavik
Arrive at Keflavik Airport, collect your rental car, and drive to Reykjavik (45 minutes). Check in and spend the afternoon in the old city — Hallgrimskirkja church and the tower viewpoint, a walk down Laugavegur, the old harbour area and the Reykjavik Street Food Hall for dinner. If energy allows, the geothermal pools at Laugardalslaug or the Sky Lagoon (20 minutes from the centre) make for an excellent first-evening experience.
Day 2: Golden Circle
Depart Reykjavik by 8am. Drive to Thingvellir National Park (45 minutes) for the tectonic rift valley and Althing historical site. Continue to Haukadalur geothermal valley (40 minutes from Thingvellir) for Strokkur geyser — allow 30 to 45 minutes to watch several eruption cycles. Gullfoss waterfall is 10 minutes from Geysir; visit both the lower and upper viewpoints. Return via the Secret Lagoon at Fludir (30 minute detour, GBP 20) for a natural geothermal pool before dinner in Reykjavik.
Day 3: Western South Coast
Drive the South Coast east from Reykjavik. Seljalandsfoss (90 minutes from Reykjavik) — walk behind the falls (allow 30 minutes including the wet approach). Skogafoss (20 minutes further east) — both the base view and the staircase climb. Continue to Reynisfjara black sand beach (observe the sneaker wave warnings). Vik for dinner and overnight — the town's position below a dramatic clifftop church with ocean views is one of Iceland's finest settings.
Day 4: Eastern South Coast and Jokulsarlon
Drive east from Vik (2.5 hours to Jokulsarlon) via the black sand outwash plain, with Vatnajokull glacier visible ahead for much of the drive. Stop at Skaftafell for a 2-hour glacier hike or the Svartifoss waterfall trail. Arrive at Jokulsarlon in the late afternoon — the lagoon light is often at its best in the 2 hours before sunset. Walk the south shore to Diamond Beach after the lagoon. Overnight near Jokulsarlon if accommodation is available, otherwise return west to Kirkjubaejarklaustur.
Day 5: Return to Reykjavik
If staying near Jokulsarlon, return to the lagoon at dawn for the best light before driving back to Reykjavik (4.5 hours). Stop at any South Coast sites missed on day 3. Blue Lagoon stop near Keflavik Airport before departure (requires advance booking — book simultaneously with your flights). Return the rental car and depart.
