How Geothermal Energy Works in Iceland
Iceland's geothermal system works on two levels. Low-temperature fields (below 150°C) heat groundwater that rises naturally and is used directly for district heating — the hot water that runs from every tap in Reykjavik. High-temperature fields (above 200°C) produce steam that drives turbines to generate electricity. Iceland generates virtually 100% of its electricity from renewable sources: approximately 65% from hydroelectric, 35% from geothermal. No coal, no gas, no nuclear — a fully renewable grid achieved not through subsidy or policy ambition but through geology.
The Svartsengi geothermal power plant on the Reykjanes Peninsula is a good example of the dual-use system. The plant generates electricity from high-pressure steam. The silica-rich hot water that remains after electricity generation is too mineralised for direct use but too hot to simply dispose of — it was discharged into a natural lava field depression, which filled and heated to 37-40°C. This accidental hot lake became the Blue Lagoon, one of Iceland's most visited attractions, while the primary output remained electricity.
Geothermal Heating
Over 90% of Icelandic homes are heated by geothermal hot water piped directly from underground springs. This system — called district heating (hitaveita) — was developed progressively from the 1930s and is now universal across the country. The cost is a fraction of gas or oil heating. Carbon emissions from residential heating in Iceland are effectively zero. Reykjavik's heating system pumps approximately 120,000 cubic metres of hot water per day at 80 to 86°C, distributed through insulated underground pipes to all buildings in the city.
Geothermal Bathing Culture
Iceland's geothermal pools — from the Blue Lagoon to the smallest municipal sundlaug — exist because there is effectively free hot water available everywhere in the country. The tradition of communal geothermal bathing is pre-Christian and likely dates to the original Norse settlement. The medieval sagas reference hot spring bathing as a social activity. Modern Icelanders continue the tradition with daily or weekly pool visits that serve the same social function as the cafe in France or the pub in Britain — a neutral, non-commercial, class-free space for conversation and community.
Geothermal Cooking
Iceland's geothermal heat is used for food production as well as energy. Geothermal greenhouses grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and cut flowers year-round, heated entirely by geothermal water — providing fresh domestic produce in a country that would otherwise import everything. In the Haukadalur valley near Geysir, a traditional rye bread (hverabrauð) is baked underground in pots buried in the geothermally heated soil for 24 hours. The result — dense, sweet, slightly smoky dark bread — is available at the area's café and is unlike any bread produced by conventional baking.
