Coverage

4G coverage is reliable in Reykjavik, all major towns, along Route 1 for most of its length, and at all significant tourist destinations. Coverage becomes patchy in fjord valleys accessible only by long gravel roads, on highland routes including all F-roads, in the interior desert regions, and in remote Westfjords areas. The Vodafone Iceland and Síminn coverage maps are accurate and worth consulting before planning routes in remote areas. Emergency calls (112) work from a wider range of locations than data coverage suggests — Iceland's coast guard and rescue service have their own communications infrastructure.

Local SIM Options

The three main Iceland mobile operators are Síminn, Nova, and Vodafone Iceland. All three sell tourist SIM cards at Keflavik Airport (arrivals hall), in Reykjavik city centre shops, and at petrol stations. A tourist SIM with unlimited or high-volume data for 14 days costs approximately ISK 2,500 to ISK 4,000 (GBP 14 to GBP 22). Activation is immediate. This is almost always cheaper than roaming charges on a UK or EU home network unless your home plan includes Iceland as a roaming destination.

eSIM Options
