Car Rental Iceland: The Complete 2026 Guide

Renting a car is the only way to see the best of Iceland at your own pace. Public transport reaches Reykjavik and a handful of main towns. Virtually everything worth seeing — waterfalls, glacier lagoons, black sand beaches, volcanic highlands — is accessible only by private vehicle. The decision of which car to rent and which insurance to buy shapes the entire experience.

2WD vs 4x4: The Honest Answer

For the Ring Road, the Golden Circle, the South Coast and all paved main attractions: a standard 2WD car is perfectly adequate from May through October. The Ring Road is paved, the main attractions are on paved or well-graded roads, and a standard Yaris or equivalent will get you to Jokulsarlon, Skogafoss, Thingvellir and back without issue.

A 4x4 is required — legally and practically — for F-roads, the highland interior, and for winter driving anywhere in Iceland. If your itinerary includes Landmannalaugar, Askja, Thorsmork or any route marked with an F prefix, book a 4x4 with genuine high ground clearance. "SUV" is a marketing term. Ask specifically about ground clearance and whether the vehicle is approved for F-roads. If the rental company hesitates, that is your answer.

In winter (November through March), a 4x4 with winter tyres is strongly recommended even on the Ring Road. Ice, snow and drifts make a 4x4 dramatically safer and more reliable. Supply is tighter than in summer — book months ahead.

Vehicle Types and What They Mean

Economy 2WD (Yaris, Fabia class): Ring Road and main attractions only. Cheapest option. No F-road access under any circumstances.

Small 4x4 (Duster, Jimny class): F-road capable. Good ground clearance. Limited luggage space. Good for solo travellers or couples.

Medium 4x4 (RAV4, CX-5 class): F-road capable. More space. The most versatile option for most trips that include highland access.

Large 4x4 / Super Jeep: Extreme terrain capability. Raised suspension, aggressive tyres, often winch-equipped. Required for the most challenging F-roads. Expensive but enables access to the most remote locations.

Campervan: Freedom and accommodation combined. Very popular in summer. Campsite network across Iceland is excellent. Campervans are prohibited on F-roads as a class — the combination of height, weight and 2WD limits their access.

Insurance: What to Actually Buy

Iceland rental companies offer a menu of insurance products. The combinations are genuinely confusing. Here is what each one does and whether you need it.

CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): Included in base rate. Limits your liability for vehicle damage but typically leaves a significant excess of ISK 150,000 to 500,000.

SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver): Reduces or eliminates the excess. Worth buying. This is the most important upgrade.

GP (Gravel Protection): Covers windscreen chips and body damage from stones and gravel. Iceland's unsealed roads throw gravel constantly. Without GP, a chipped windscreen — extremely common — comes out of your pocket. Buy it.

SAP (Sand and Ash Protection): Covers paintwork abrasion from volcanic sand and ash. Relevant on the South Coast, near Vik, and anywhere near active volcanic areas. Recommended if you are driving those areas.

TP (Theft Protection): Optional. Iceland has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Theft of rental cars is extremely rare. Skip it unless your company requires it.

When to Book

June, July and August are peak season. 4x4 vehicles and campervans sell out weeks or months ahead of the travel date. Book 2 to 3 months in advance for summer travel. Economy 2WD cars are more available but prices rise sharply closer to travel dates. September and October offer better availability and lower prices than peak summer, with the added benefit of early aurora season.

December to February is Christmas and Northern Lights season. Demand is lower than summer but supply of good 4x4 vehicles is also lower. Book 6 to 8 weeks ahead.

Best Booking Strategy

Pay attention to the included mileage (most Iceland rentals are unlimited), the fuel policy (most are full-to-full), and the return time flexibility.

Collect your car from Keflavik Airport if you arrive on an international flight. The airport rental offices are efficient and save you an extra journey. Return at Keflavik if possible — city centre return adds a bus or taxi transfer to the airport.
