How to Get There
Driving
From Reykjavík, take Ring Road (Route 1) eastbound for approximately 56 km to the junction with Route 35. Turn left onto Route 35 towards Geysir, continuing for 50 km through the towns of Laugarvatn and past Skálholt. The total journey covers 106 km and typically takes 1 hour 20 minutes under normal conditions. The route is well-signposted with "Geysir" and "Golden Circle" directional signs throughout.
The final approach follows Route 35 directly to the Geysir geothermal area, where Strokkur is located. Road conditions are excellent year-round on this major tourist route, with regular snow clearing in winter months.
Parking
A large tarmacked car park accommodates several hundred vehicles directly adjacent to the geothermal field. Parking is free of charge, though spaces can fill rapidly during peak summer months (June–August) between 11:00–15:00. Coach parking is designated in a separate area. Additional overflow parking is available in gravel areas during busy periods.
Access
Strokkur sits just 150 metres from the car park via well-maintained paved walkways suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The path includes several viewing platforms at different distances from the geyser, with rope barriers maintaining safe distances from the active springs. The walk is entirely flat with no steps or significant elevation changes.

The primary attraction is witnessing Strokkur's eruptions, which occur with remarkable regularity every 5–10 minutes. The geyser's pool measures approximately 3 metres in diameter, and careful observation reveals the telltale signs of an impending eruption: increased bubbling activity and a distinctive blue bubble that forms just before the water column shoots skyward.
The surrounding Haukadalur valley contains numerous other geothermal features worth exploring. The original Geysir, though largely dormant, remains historically significant and occasionally produces minor eruptions. Smaller hot springs dot the landscape, including Blesi, a double pool with contrasting blue and milky blue waters caused by different mineral concentrations.
The visitor centre houses educational exhibits about geothermal activity, local geology, and the cultural significance of the area. Best Time to Visit
**June–August** represents peak season with the most comfortable weather conditions, longest daylight hours, and full facility operations. However, expect significant crowds, particularly between 11:00–15:00 when tour coaches arrive en masse.
**April–May and September–October** offer excellent shoulder season conditions with fewer visitors, mild weather, and good road access. September provides particularly favourable conditions with autumn colours enhancing the landscape photography.
**November–March** brings winter conditions with snow cover creating dramatic contrasts around the geothermal features. Steam becomes more visible in cold air, enhancing the visual spectacle. Daylight hours are limited, and facilities may operate on reduced schedules. Road conditions require winter tyres or 4WD vehicles during adverse weather.
Weather can change rapidly year-round, with wind potentially affecting the direction of steam and spray from eruptions.
Safety
Maintain safe distances behind designated barriers at all times—geothermal water reaches temperatures of 80–120°C and can cause severe burns. The ground around hot springs may be unstable, and breaking through thin crusts can result in serious injury.
Strong winds can blow boiling water and steam across viewing areas; position yourself upwind when possible. Children require constant supervision due to the numerous unmarked hot springs throughout the area.
Winter conditions create additional hazards including icy pathways and reduced visibility during storms. The combination of steam and freezing temperatures can create treacherous walking surfaces.
Never attempt to collect water samples or throw objects into the springs, as this can alter eruption patterns and damage fragile geothermal systems.
