Overview

Námaskarð, also known as Hverir, represents one of Iceland's most otherworldly geothermal landscapes. Located on the eastern slopes of Námafjall mountain in North Iceland, this active high-temperature geothermal field transforms the earth into a painter's palette of yellows, oranges, and rust-reds created by sulphur deposits and mineral oxidation. The area spans approximately 1 square kilometre of bubbling mud pools, hissing steam vents, and sulphur crystals that have been forming for thousands of years.

The geothermal activity here reaches temperatures of up to 250°C beneath the surface, creating the dramatic landscape that visitors encounter today. Unlike many of Iceland's geothermal areas, Námaskarð offers an easily accessible experience of raw volcanic power without requiring technical hiking or 4WD vehicles. The site holds particular geological significance as part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge system, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet.

What sets Námaskarð apart from other Icelandic geothermal areas is its moon-like terrain and the sheer concentration of different geothermal phenomena in one compact location. How to Get There

Driving

From Reykjavík, take Ring Road (Route 1) east for approximately 460km - a journey of 5-6 hours. Pass through Akureyri, then continue east for 100km to reach the Lake Mývatn area. Námaskarð lies directly on Route 1, making it one of Iceland's most accessible geothermal areas. The site is clearly marked with brown tourist signs approximately 6km east of Reykjahlíð village.

From Akureyri, the journey takes 1 hour 15 minutes via Route 1 east (100km). The road is paved throughout and accessible to all vehicle types year-round, though winter conditions may require careful driving.

Parking

A gravel car park accommodates approximately 40-50 vehicles directly beside Route 1. Parking is free with no time restrictions. The car park can become crowded during peak summer months (July-August), particularly between 10:00-16:00. Additional roadside parking is available but should be used carefully to avoid blocking traffic.

Access

The main geothermal area begins immediately adjacent to the car park, requiring no walking. Wooden boardwalks and marked paths lead through the most active sections, with the furthest viewpoints approximately 300 metres from the car park. Paths are generally well-maintained but can become muddy during wet weather. No special equipment is required.

What to See and Do

The main attraction consists of dozens of bubbling mud pools ranging from small pot-holes to pools several metres across. These solfataras reach temperatures of 80-100°C at the surface, creating constant bubbling and gurgling sounds. The largest and most active pools are located in the central area, accessed via the main boardwalk.

Steam vents, known as fumaroles, dot the landscape and can be heard hissing and whistling from considerable distances. The most impressive cluster lies on the northern section of the field, where multiple vents create towering columns of steam. These vents deposit pure sulphur crystals around their openings, creating brilliant yellow formations.

The terrain itself tells a geological story through its colouration. Red and orange areas indicate iron oxidation, while yellow regions show active sulphur deposition. White and grey zones typically mark areas of clay formation created by acidic conditions. Walking the marked trails provides close-up views of these mineral processes in action.

Photography opportunities are exceptional, particularly during golden hour when the steam creates dramatic backlighting effects. The contrast between the colourful geothermal features and the dark volcanic mountains provides compelling compositions throughout the day.

Best Time to Visit

**June-August:** Peak season offers the warmest weather and longest daylight hours, but also the largest crowds. Geothermal activity remains constant, and all paths are easily accessible. Midday visits may encounter tour bus groups.

**April-May & September-October:** Shoulder seasons provide excellent visiting conditions with fewer crowds and dramatic lighting conditions. Weather can be unpredictable, so waterproof clothing is essential.

**November-March:** Winter visits offer atmospheric experiences with steam more visible in cold air. However, paths may be icy, and daylight is limited. The geothermal area remains active regardless of air temperature, creating striking contrasts between hot springs and snow.

**Daily timing:** Early morning (07:00-09:00) and late afternoon (16:00-18:00) provide the best photographic light and fewer crowds. Steam is more visible during cooler parts of the day.

Safety

Hot springs and mud pools reach scalding temperatures capable of causing severe burns. Visitors must remain on designated paths and boardwalks at all times. The ground around geothermal features is often unstable and may give way without warning.

Hydrogen sulphide gas creates the characteristic "rotten egg" smell but can be dangerous in high concentrations. While outdoor exposure poses minimal risk to healthy individuals, those with respiratory conditions should exercise caution during calm weather when gases may accumulate.

Wooden boardwalks become extremely slippery when wet. Proper footwear with good grip is essential, particularly during Iceland's frequent rain showers. Metal railings and surfaces near steam vents become very hot and should not be touched.

The area remains geologically active, meaning new vents may appear and existing features may change without warning. Never approach areas showing new activity or unusual disturbance.
