Laugavegur Trek: The Complete Hiking Guide

The Laugavegur is Iceland's great highland trek — a 55-kilometre route through extraordinary volcanic landscape connecting the rhyolite mountains of Landmannalaugar in the interior with the green glacial valley of Thorsmork on the South Coast fringe. It is consistently ranked among the world's great multi-day hikes, and justifiably so. The landscape changes completely every day: obsidian lava fields, geothermal steam vents, glacial river crossings, wildflower meadows, and views of multiple glaciers simultaneously. Route Overview

The route runs southwest from Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork, typically hiked over 4 to 5 days. Most hikers walk south (Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork) to descend progressively from the highest terrain. The reverse is possible but involves a tougher ascent profile. The four standard stages are: Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker (12km, hardest single day, crossing the obsidian lava field and the highest terrain on the route); Hrafntinnusker to Alftavatn (12km, dramatic descent to the lake, river crossings); Alftavatn to Emstrur (15km, Markarfljot canyon views); Emstrur to Thorsmork (15km, the final descent into the birch valley).

An optional fifth day continues from Thorsmork over the Fimmvorduhals pass to Skogar on the South Coast, passing between Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull glaciers and descending via 26 named waterfalls. This extension is extraordinary and strongly recommended if time allows.

When to Hike

The Laugavegur is open from late June to mid-September, depending on snowmelt. Peak season is July and August. The route is busiest in early August. For a quieter experience with similar conditions, late June (immediately after opening) or the first two weeks of September offer good weather, fewer hikers, and often the best light. The September landscape has the added bonus of autumn colours emerging on the Thorsmork birch woodland.

Fitness and Experience Required

The Laugavegur is a challenging but non-technical hike — no climbing equipment or specialist skills required. The demand is physical: 12 to 15 kilometres per day over uneven terrain with a loaded pack (typically 10 to 15 kg including camping gear), river crossings that require confidence and balance, and weather that can be severe regardless of season. Previous multi-day hiking experience is strongly recommended. Day hikes of similar terrain in the weeks before your trip will significantly improve your experience.

Guided vs Independent

Independent hiking is fully possible and the majority of hikers complete the route without guides. Guided tours provide logistical support (luggage transfers between huts are available through some operators), safety expertise for river crossings, and context for the landscape.
