How to Get There
Driving
From Reykjavík, take Route 1 (Ring Road) eastbound for approximately 260km to the junction with F206 near Eldgjá (total journey time 3.5 hours). Turn north onto F206, a highland F-road requiring a 4WD vehicle with high clearance. Continue 15km on F206 through river crossings and rough terrain to reach the main Lakagígar car park. The final approach involves navigating loose volcanic gravel and potentially muddy conditions depending on weather.
From Kirkjubæjarklaustur, drive northwest on Route 1 for 25km, then turn north onto F206. This southern approach covers 20km of F-road driving and typically takes 45 minutes from Kirkjubæjarklaustur to the car park.
