The dramatic landscapes — black sand beaches, glacier lagoons, volcanic mountains, lava fields — provide foregrounds that transform an aurora photograph from a green smear in the sky into something extraordinary. But aurora photography has a steep learning curve and specific technical requirements. These are the settings and techniques that actually produce great results.
Understanding What You Are Photographing
Aurora borealis is light emitted by atmospheric gas molecules excited by charged particles streaming from the sun along magnetic field lines. The colour depends on the altitude and the gas molecule — oxygen at 100km altitude produces green (the most common), oxygen above 200km produces red, and nitrogen produces blue and purple. At low activity (KP 1 to 2), aurora appears as a faint green arc near the northern horizon. At high activity (KP 5 to 7+), it fills the sky in curtains that move and ripple like a vast illuminated fabric being shaken by invisible hands.
The key implication for photography: fast, dynamic aurora at high KP requires short exposures to capture movement. Faint, slow aurora at low KP requires long exposures to register at all. Your settings must match the activity level.
Essential Equipment
Camera with manual mode: Any DSLR or mirrorless camera with full manual exposure control. Some advanced smartphones now produce reasonable aurora images in night mode, but a dedicated camera gives dramatically better results and full creative control.
Wide-angle lens: 14mm to 24mm is ideal. f/1.8 to f/2.8 maximum aperture. The wider the field of view and the larger the aperture, the better your results. A 50mm f/1.8 will work but crops the sky significantly.
Tripod: Non-negotiable. Any exposure over 1/30 second requires a perfectly stable tripod. Do not attempt hand-holding aurora photography — it produces blur that no post-processing can fix.
Remote shutter release: Touching the camera during an exposure introduces micro-vibration even with a tripod. A wireless or wired remote shutter cable eliminates this. Alternatively, use your camera's 2-second self-timer.
Spare batteries: Cold drains camera batteries dramatically faster than room temperature. A battery that lasts 400 shots indoors may last 80 shots at 0°C. Bring two or three fully charged spares and keep them inside your jacket, switching to a warm battery when the current one weakens.
Camera Settings
Mode: Full manual (M).
Aperture: As wide as your lens allows. f/1.8 to f/2.8. If your lens only opens to f/4, you will need to compensate with higher ISO.
ISO: Start at ISO 1600 and adjust based on the brightness of the aurora and the amount of ambient light (moon phase, distance from towns). For faint aurora: ISO 3200. For bright aurora with a full moon illuminating the landscape: ISO 800. Modern full-frame cameras handle ISO 3200 to 6400 well. Crop sensor cameras generate more noise at high ISO — keep below 3200 if possible.
Shutter speed: The most variable setting and the one that most affects the character of the image. For slow, faint aurora at KP 1 to 2: 15 to 25 seconds. For moderate aurora at KP 3 to 4: 8 to 15 seconds. For fast, active curtains at KP 5+: 2 to 8 seconds. Longer exposures collect more light but blur movement — at high KP, 20-second exposures turn the aurora into a featureless green wash rather than capturing the texture and movement.
Focus: Manual focus on infinity. Autofocus fails completely in darkness. Before the aurora appears, aim at a bright star, engage live view, zoom in digitally until the star is a sharp pinpoint, then set that focus manually and tape the focus ring. Do not touch it again.
White balance: Auto white balance produces unpredictable colour shifts between frames. Set to Daylight (5500K) or a fixed custom value for consistent results across a shoot.
RAW format: Shoot in RAW if your camera supports it. RAW files retain full exposure and colour data, allowing dramatic recovery of highlights and shadows in post-processing. JPEG compression discards this information permanently.
Best Photography Locations
Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon (Southeast): The icebergs reflecting aurora light from below while the aurora fills the sky above is one of Iceland's most celebrated photographic compositions. Dark skies, no light pollution, dramatic scale. Stay close to the lagoon rather than Diamond Beach for the reflection element.
Kirkjufell Mountain (Snaefellsnes): Iceland's most photographed aurora location. The conical mountain with the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall in the foreground creates an instantly recognisable composition. Expect other photographers on active nights. Position on the north side of the waterfall for the classic angle.
Thingvellir Lake (Golden Circle): 45 minutes from Reykjavik. Dark skies by capital standards. The lake surface provides aurora reflections. Access to multiple angles around the shoreline. A flexible choice for Reykjavik-based travellers.
Reynisfjara Beach (South Coast): The basalt sea stacks silhouetted against aurora over the ocean, with waves in long exposure. Technically challenging but visually powerful. Use a longer shutter speed (20 to 30 seconds) to blur the waves into silk.
Vik Village (South Coast): The hillside church above Vik provides an elevated shooting position looking north over the village and out to the coast. Multiple compositional options within a small area.
Myvatn area (North Iceland): Lower cloud probability than the south, consistently dark skies, volcanic landscape foregrounds.
Planning Your Aurora Night
Check three things simultaneously: the Space Weather Prediction Center 3-day KP forecast (swpc.noaa.gov), the Auroras.live app for near-real-time KP values, and the Iceland Met Office cloud cover map at en.vedur.is. You need KP 3+ and a cloud-free forecast aligned for the same night and the same location. This alignment is the entire game — when all three align, get in your car and drive to your pre-scouted location immediately. Do not wait until tomorrow.
