Skaftafell, within Vatnajokull National Park, has a large campsite and the park visitor centre, positioned between Jokulsarlon and the western South Coast. Kirkjubaejarklaustur (usually abbreviated to Klaustur) is a small village approximately 130km west of Jokulsarlon with several guesthouses and a hotel. Both are workable bases for Jokulsarlon day visits while also providing access to the National Park hiking trails.

Glacier Lagoon Accommodation

Staying overnight near Jökulsárlón provides access to the two best photography times — dawn and dusk — that day visitors who drive from Reykjavik (4.5 hours) cannot reach.
